Philippines officially called the Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands. It is the twelfth most populated country in the world and is rich in its varied culture with an extensive coastline supporting various flora and fauna. Philippines is a sovereign state with a presidential system. It has a newly industrialized economy with agricultural sector playing major contribution to the growth of the economy. Philippines has seen a drastic improvement in the health status in recent years supported by a decrease in infant mortality rate and improved life expectancy. This country has a national health insurance agency- PhilHealth covering majority of the population of Philippines. In 2010 this scheme underwent a major reform which aimed at helping the poor population and providing more comprehensive benefits. Decentralization to local governments to have autonomy of the health sector was granted in the year 1991. This was done to improve the health sector performance and provide basic health service to underserved locations in the country.
